Six novel oxorhenium(v) complexes incorporating quinoline and isoquinoline carboxylic acid derivatives were prepared in good yields. Relying on the experimental conditions, compounds with two chelate ligands [ReOCl(iqc) 2]·MeOH (1), [ReO(OMe)(iqc)2] (2), [ReO(OMe)(mqc)2] (3) and [ReO(OMe)(8-qc)2] (4) and compounds incorporating one bidentate ligand [ReOCl2(iqc)(PPh 3)] (5) and [ReOCl2(mqc)(PPh3)] (6) were synthesized (iqcH = isoquinoline-1-carboxylic acid, mqcH = 4-methoxy-2- quinolinecarboxylic acid and 8-qcH = 8-quinolinecarboxylic acid). The reported compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In compounds 1 and 2, one chelate ligand occupies an axial and an equatorial position, while the other one occupies two equatorial positions, forming a cis-(N,N) isomer. In turn, complexes 3 and 4 show a rare ligand arrangement with two trans-N, trans-O chelate ligands in the equatorial plane and a linear axial [ORe-OMe] unit. The complexes with one chelate ligand 5 and 6 are cis-(Cl,Cl)-isomers. All compounds were tested as potential catalysts in the epoxidation of cyclooctene with 3 equiv. of tert-butylhydroperoxide. The yield of cyclooctane oxide varies between 16 and 68% (50 C, 24 h), and the catalytic competency of compounds 1-6 was discussed with regard to the structure of each complex.

Changes in luminescence due to solution-mediated phase transition (SMPT) and crystal-to-crystal phase transitions of a novel cyclometalated platinum(II) complex with isoquinoline-1-carboxylate (Iq-1-COO-) [Pt(bzq)(Iq-1-COO)] (bzq-: benzoquinolinate) were studied experimentally and theoretically. Recrystallization of the complex allowed three crystal forms depending on the solvent: red polymorph RDMF (lambdaemi = 689 nm), yellow polymorph YDMSO (lambdaemi = 641 nm), and red pseudopolymorph RBCHCl3 (lambdaemi = 721 nm). Crystals of RDMF in the DMF solution at room temperature showed SMPT to yellow crystals YDMF (lambdaemi = 627 nm), in which RDMF first dissolved partly into the solution, and then the dissolved complex crystallized as YDMF. RBCHCl3 exhibited crystal-to-crystal phase transitions to RDMF and YDMF by being heated to 150 C and stored in atmospheric conditions, respectively. Molecular structures of each of the four crystal forms, analyzed by X-ray crystallography, showed different planarities because of the dihedral angles between the bzq- and Iq planes being 3.15, 4.80, 8.35, and 17.7 for RBCHCl3, RDMF, YDMSO, and YDMF, respectively. The planar complexes in RDMF and RBCHCl3 constructed dimers through intermolecular Pt-Pt and pi-pi interactions, whereas the distorted complexes in YDMF and YDMSO remained as monomers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which reveal the relation between the molecular structure and thermodynamic stability, suggest that the SMPT is triggered by thermodynamic transformation from the metastable planar structure to the stable distorted structure. The intradimer interactions in RDMF and RBCHCl3 induced red-shifts in the absorption and emission colors from those of YDMF and YDMSO; thus, the photophysical properties of RBCHCl3 and RDMF originate from the MMLIqCT state in contrast with the MLIqCT/LbzqLIqCT character for YDMF and YDMSO. DFT and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations in the ground and excited states provide insight into the structural, electronic, and optical properties.

A series of alpha,beta-unsaturated hydroxamic acid derivatives as novel HDAC inhibitors (HDACi) with structural modifications of the connecting unit and the CAP group was synthesized. The in vitro evaluation against the human cancer cell lines A2780 and Cal27 identified 6e and 7j as the most potent compounds regarding HDAC inhibitory activity and inhibition of proliferation. Isoform profiling against HDAC2, 4, 6 and 8 revealed a preference for HDAC2 and 6 for both compounds in contrast to the pan HDACi panobinostat. 6e and 7j enhanced significantly cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity in a combination treatment mediated by increased apoptosis induction and caspase-3/7 activation. The interaction between 6e or 7j and cisplatin was highly synergistic and more pronounced for the cisplatin resistant subline Cal27CisR. IC50 values of cisplatin were even lower in Cal27CisR pretreated with 6e or 7j than for the parental cell line Cal27. Based on our findings, the novel dual class I/HDAC6 inhibitors could serve as an option to overcome cisplatin resistance with fewer side effects in comparison to panobinostat.

A convenient and efficient method for the synthesis of 2-halogen-substituted pyridines is described. The decarboxylative halogenation of 2-picolinic acids with dihalomethane proceeded smoothly via N-chlorocarbene intermediates to afford 2-halogen-substituted pyridines in satisfactory to excellent yields under transition-metal-free conditions. This new type of decarboxylative halogenation is operationally simple and exhibits high functional-group tolerance.
