Slow Magnetic Relaxation of Co(II) Single Chains Embedded within Metal-Organic Superstructures

Two coordination polymers of the type Co(BPDC)(N-ox), with BPDC being 4,4?-biphenyldicarboxylate and N-ox being pyridine N-oxide (PNO) or isoquinoline N-oxide (IQNO), have been synthesized and characterized. The compounds feature 2D and 3D metal-organic networks that encapsulate Co(II)-based chains in a rigid superstructure. The dc and ac magnetic properties of these Co(BPDC)(N-ox) materials have been investigated alongside those of a related Co(BDC)(PNO) compound (where BDC is 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate), which contains a smaller dicarboxylate linker. These Co(II)-containing coordination polymers exhibit slow magnetic relaxation, as observed by ac susceptibility measurements. The observed magnetic behavior of all compounds is consistent with an antiferromagnetic interaction between canted Co spins along the 1D skeleton, resulting in single-chain magnet behavior. In the case of Co(BPDC)(IQNO), weak interchain magnetic interactions yield 3D antiferromagnetic order while the inherent magnetic behavior stemming from the chain component is maintained. The combination of these effects in this material puts it at the frontier between single-chain magnets and classical bulk antiferromagnets. This work contributes to the limited group of materials featuring the organization of single-chain magnets within a coordination polymer superstructure.

Palladium-catalyzed highly regioselective and stereoselective arylation of electron-rich allylamines with aryl bromides

A palladium-catalyzed, highly efficient Heck arylation of electron-rich N,N-diprotected allylamine derivatives with a wide range of aryl bromides under ligand-free conditions has been developed. In the presence of Pd(OAc) 2 and an appropriate additive, the reaction proceeds with excellent regioselectivity and stereoselectivity, leading exclusively to the gamma-arylated (E)-allylamine products in good to excellent yields. It was found that the choice of solvent, olefin, additive and temperature has an important influence on the reaction. Worthy of note is that good results were observed only when using N,N-diprotected allylamines containing carbamate moiety, and the steric properties of allylamines also have important impacts on the regiocontrol. The use of TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy) or HQ (hydroquinone) as the additive is also crucial for securing a faster reaction rate. This method provides a straightforward approach for the efficient synthesis of various gamma-arylated, linear (E)-allylamines.

The role of the sulfonamide moiety of Noyori-Ikariya [Ru(II)Cl(eta6-p-cymene)(S,S)-(N-arylsulfonyl-DPEN)] (where DPEN?=?1,2-diphenylethylene-1,2-diamine) half-sandwich complexes in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of imines (1-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline and 6,7-dimethoxy-1-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline) was investigated. Nine complexes were synthesized and characterized, most of which have not been previously reported and a majority of the corresponding ligands (N-arylsulfonyl-DPEN) have not been described in imine ATH. The study demonstrates that the structure of the sulfonamide fragment strongly affects the catalytic activity. By monitoring the reaction kinetics, it was found that the reactivity of certain complexes was moderately enhanced and?the enantioselectivity was affected as well, albeit to a lesser extent. No simple structure?activity pattern was found, suggesting that extensive screening experiments are necessary in order to obtain the optimal catalyst for a particular substrate. The study complements other previously reported works on structure?activity relationships concerning Ru(II)-catalyzed ATH by adding a new dimension of investigation.

Heptapeptide-based modification leading to enhancing the action of MTCA on activated platelets, P-selectin, GPIIb/IIIa

Aim: The modification of platelet inhibitor to enhance its targeting capacity toward platelets is of clinical importance. Thus, (1R, 3S)-1-methyl-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acid (MTCA), a platelet inhibitor, was modified with Lys(Pro-Ala-Lys)-Arg-Gly-Asp-Val (KKV), platelet targeting peptide, to form MTCA-KKV. Materials & methods: MTCA and MTCA-KKV were synthesized to identify the effect of KKV modification on MTCA and platelets. Results: Atomic force microscopy imaged MTCA-KKV effectively accumulated on activated platelets. UV spectra showed that MTCA-KKV concentration dependently changed P-selectin and GPIIb/IIIa conformations. For platelet aggregation, the IC50 of MTCA-KKV was approximately 1/10 folds of MTCA. Conclusion: KKV modification led to forming MTCA-KKV that is superior to MTCA in terms of accumulating on activated platelets, targeting P-selectin and GPIIb/IIIa and inhibiting platelet aggregation. MTCA-KKV could be a promising lead for further investigation.
