Owing to its amphiphilic characteristic, OPV-Ru possesses good self-assembly capability in water to form nanoparticles through hydrophobic interaction and pi?pi stacking, and numerous positive charges on the surface of nanoparticles displayed a strong electrostatic interaction with negatively charged substrate molecules, creating a local microenvironment for enhancing the catalysis efficiency in comparison to dispersed catalytic center molecule (TOF value was enhanced by about 15 fold). OPV-Ru could selectively accumulate in the mitochondria of living cells. Benefiting from its inherent fluorescence, the dynamic distribution in cells and uptake behavior of OPV-Ru could be visualized under fluorescence microscopy. This work represents the first demonstration of a multifunctional organometallic complex catalyzing natural hydrogenation transformation in specific subcellular compartments of living cells with excellent performance, fluorescent imaging ability, specific mitochondria targeting and good chemoselectivity with high catalysis efficiency.

Complex hydrocarbon and aromatic compounds degrading marine bacterial strains were isolated from deep sea sediment after enrichment on spent engine (SE) oil. Phenotypic characterization and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed the isolates were related to members of the Pseudoalteromonas sp., Ruegeria sp., Exiguobacterium sp. and Acinetobacter sp. Biodegradation using 1% (v/v) SE oil with individual and mixed strains showed the efficacy of SE oil utilization within a short retention time. The addition of non-ionic surfactant 0.05% (v/v) Tween 80 as emulsifying agent enhanced the solubility of hydrocarbons and renders them more accessible for biodegradation. The degradation of several compounds and the metabolites formed during the microbial oxidation process were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. The potential of this consortium to biodegrade SE oil with and without emulsifying agent provides possible application in bioremediation of oil contaminated marine environment.

The coordinate bond in the 4n complexes predominates over the amide-to-amide hydrogen bond giving rise to structures ranging from discrete complexes to three-dimensional coordination polymers. Only the 4c complex merges supramolecular beta-sheets connected by the silver coordination bonds.

Imine reductases (IRED) are promising catalysts for the synthesis of optically pure secondary cyclic amines. Three novel IREDs from Paenibacillus elgii B69, Streptomyces ipomoeae 91-03 and Pseudomonas putida KT2440 were identified by amino acid or structural similarity search, cloned and recombinantly expressed in E. coli and their substrate scope was investigated. Besides the acceptance of cyclic amines, also acyclic amines could be identified as substrates for all IREDs. For the IRED from P. putida, a crystal structure (PDB-code 3L6D) is available in the database, but the function of the protein was not investigated so far. This enzyme showed the highest apparent E-value of approximately Eapp = 52 for (R)-methylpyrrolidine of the IREDs investigated in this study. Thus, an excellent enantiomeric purity of >99% and 97% conversion was reached in a biocatalytic reaction using resting cells after 24 h. Interestingly, a histidine residue could be confirmed as a catalytic residue by mutagenesis, but the residue is placed one turn aside compared to the formally known position of the catalytic Asp187 of Streptomyces kanamyceticus IRED.
