Increasing research interest was raised in two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2-dimensional COFs) probably due to their intriguing structural features and versatile functions. However, due to the relatively limited configuration of precursors, the documented 2-dimensional COFs to date were limited to only nine topologies which greatly restricts their development. Herein, the authors newly designed and synthesized three K-shaped two-in-one building units (Ni-Salphen, Cu-Salphen, and Zn-Salphen), which not only feature a special configuration distinguished from the reported monomers but also integrate metallosalphen functional moieties. Self-polycondensation of these K-shaped monomers facilely afforded three new metallosalphen-based COFs (Ni-Salphen-COF, Cu-Salphen-COF, and Zn-Salphen-COF) with an unprecedented tju topol. (tju = Tianjin University) that does not exist in the database of ToposPro. Regarding to the densely and uniformly distributed metallosalphens in the skeletons, the photocatalytic bromination performance of the three COFs were further investigated. Among them, Ni-Salphen-COF exhibited the highest performance on both conversion efficiency (>99%) and selectivity (>90%).

A new sustainable method is reported for the formation of aromatic carbon-heteroatom bonds under solvent-free and mild conditions (no co-oxidant, no strong acid and no toxic reagents) by using a new type of green ionic liquid The bromination of methoxy arenes was chosen as a model reaction. The reaction methodol. is based on only using natural sodium bromine, which is transformed into an electrophilic brominating reagent within an ionic liquid, easily prepared from the melted salt FeCl3 hexahydrate. Bromination reactions with this in-situ-generated reagent gave good yields and excellent regioselectivity under simple and environmentally friendly conditions. To understand the unusual bromine polarity reversal of sodium bromine without any strong oxidant, the mol. structure of the reaction medium was characterized by Raman and direct infusion electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS). An extensive computational investigation using d. functional theory methods was performed to describe a mechanism that suggests indirect oxidation of Br- through new iron adducts. The versatility of the methodol. was successively applied to nitration and thiocyanation of methoxy arenes using KNO3 and KSCN in melted hexahydrated FeCl3.

Gem-Diarylheterocycles display a wide range of biol. activity. Here we present a systematic study into the formation of 4- to 6-membered O- and N-heterocycles and cyclobutanes bearing the diaryl motif through a catalytic Friedel-Crafts reaction from the corresponding benzylic alcs. 3,3-Diaryltetrahydrofurans, 4,4-diaryltetrahydropyrans, 3,3-diarylpyrrolidines, 4,4-diaryl-piperidines, as well as diarylcyclobutanes are examined, with results for 3,3-diaryloxetanes and 3,3-diarylazetidines presented for comparison. Three catalytic systems are investigated for each substrate [Ca(II), Li(I) and Fe(III)], across preinstalled aromatic groups of differing electronic character. In most cases examined, the diaryl product is obtained directly from the alc. with good yields using the most appropriate catalyst system. In the absence of a nucleophile, the olefins from the 5- and 6-membered substrates by elimination of water are obtained under the same reaction conditions.

We report an oxidative ring-opening strategy to transform cyclopropylamides and cyclobutylamides into fluorinated imines. The imines can be isolated in their more stable hemiaminal form, with the fluorine atom installed selectively at the γ or δ position. Both inexpensive benzophenone with UVA light or organic and inorganic dyes with blue light could be used as photoredox catalysts to promote this process. Various fluorinated amines were then obtained by nucleophilic attack on the hemiaminals in one pot, giving access to a broad range of useful building blocks for medicinal chem.

The purpose of this study was to profile the chem. constituents and biol. activities of methanol extract of five lichens; Lobaria japonica, Lobaria retigera, Heterodermia leucomela, Heterodermia speciosa and Ramalina spp. collected from Sagarmatha National Park, Solukhumbu District, Nepal. Total phenolic content was evaluated by Folin Ciocalteu method while total flavonoid content was evaluated by aluminum chloride colorimetric method. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay and α-amylase inhibitory activity was evaluated by starch-iodine method. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by agar-well diffusion method. Similarly, the highest flavonoid content was observed in L. retigera and lowest in Ramalina spp. The highest DPPH radical scavenging activity was shown by L. retigera and lowest by H. speciosa. The lichens possessed high antimicrobial properties against E. coli, S. aureus and B. subtilis. Metabolites profiling of selected three lichens species by Gas Chromatog.-Mass Spectrometry revealed the presence of atraric acid, Me haematomate, orcinol and Me everniate as the major components. Among the five lichens, L. japonica and L. retigera were found to possess potent biol. activities as well as higher phenolic and flavonoid contents. These lichens can be further studied and processed for the com. production of polyphenols.
