The palladium-catalysed direct coupling of aryl halides with heteroaromatics in greener solvents than DMF or DMAc, which are often employed for such couplings, would be a considerable advantage for both industrial application and sustainable development. We observed that a range of aryl bromides undergoe coupling via C-H bond activation/functionalisation reaction of thiazoles or imidazoles in moderate to good yields using pentan-1-ol or 3-methylbutan-1-ol as the solvents. Pentan-1-ol and 3-methylbutan-1-ol are less toxic than DMF or DMAc, moreover they are bioresources as they can be obtained by fermentation. Therefore, these reaction conditions are certainly more eco-compatible than those generally employed for such couplings.

Complex 6?10+[B(3,5-(CF3)2C6H 3)4 -] has a Ka = 3 × 10 10 M-1 at RT in CH2Cl2, by far the most strongly bound triple hydrogen bonded system measured to date. The X-ray crystal structure of 6?10+ with a BPh4- counteranion shows a planar array of three short (NHcombining minus sign below…Ncombining minus sign below distances 1.95-2.15 A), parallel (but staggered rather than strictly linear; N-H…N angles 165.4-168.8), primary hydrogen bonds. We report a dual-tasked methylation that is based on cooperative palladium/norbornene catalysis. Readily available (hetero)aryl halides (39 iodides and 4 bromides) and inexpensive MeOTs or trimethylphosphate are utilized as the substrates and methylating reagent, respectively. Six types of “ipso” terminations can modularly couple with this “ortho” C-H methylation to constitute a versatile methylation toolbox for preparing diversified methylated arenes. This toolbox features inexpensive methyl sources, excellent functional-group tolerance, simple reaction procedures, and scalability. Importantly, it can be uneventfully extended to isotope-labeled methylation by switching to the corresponding reagents CD3OTs or 13CH3OTs. Moreover, this toolbox can be applied to late-stage modification of biorelevant substrates with complete stereoretention. We believe these salient and practical features of our dual-tasked methylation toolbox will be welcomed by academic and industrial researchers.
