A mixture consisting of 4-bromo-1-methylisoquinoline (800 mg, 3.60 mmol), (diphenylmethylene)hydrazine (707 mg, 3.60 mmol), BINAP (224 mg, 0.360 mmol), palladium(II) acetate (80.9 mg, 0.360 mmol), t-BuONa (1.04 g, 10.8 mmol), and 1,4-dioxane (20 mL) was stirred at 100 C. for 16 h before cooling to room temperature. The suspension was filtered though a pad of diatomaceous earth and the pad was washed with ethyl acetate (30 mL). The filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to give a crude product, which was added into water (15 mL). The resultant mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (20 mL*3). The combined organic extracts were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to afford crude compound 32a, which was purified by FCC (petroleum ether: ethyl acetate=4:1) to afford compound 32a (500 mg, 41%) as a brown oil.
