A simple, facile and efficient method was developed for the Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of arenes using magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles under solvent-free sonication. The γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were used as an efficient and magnetically recoverable catalyst for the synthesis of aromatic ketones in good to excellent yields at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. The reaction occurred with high regioselectivity under mild condition. The magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were economically synthesized in large-scale, easily separated from the reaction mixture by an external magnet and able to be reused several times without significant loss of the catalytic performance, which made them easy application to industrial processes.

The wide substrate scope of this reaction and the transformability of the resulting thiosulfonates RSTs enable expeditious access to divergent multifunctionalized sulfides.

Highly selective direct monofluorination of indoles and arenes was developed through an approach that allows site-specific solubility of substrate and fluorine source in the micelle. This approach was highly selective for a broad range of substrates with excellent functional group tolerance. Differences in binding constant and solubility of indoles and arenes in the micelle allowed the fine-tuning of selectivity. Control experiments suggested a radical pathway and provided insight into the role of micelles of the environmentally benign amphiphile PS-750-M. Dynamic light scattering experiments strongly indicated the site-specific solubility of the substrate and fluorine source. The methodol. was successfully adapted to gram scale and the E-factor established from a recycle study indicated that the process was environmentally responsible and sustainable.

Due to its high stability toward acidified environments, this single-site heterogeneous catalyst is suitable for the trifluoromethylation of synthetically interesting (hetero)arenes under visible-light irradiation at room temperature Furthermore, the heterogeneous catalyst could efficiently be reused for at least three times with minimal catalyst leaching/deactivation.

The development of a novel chemoselective functionalization can diversify the strategy for synthesizing the target mols. The perfect chemoselectivity between aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes is difficult to achieve by the previous methods. The aromatic aldehyde-selective nucleophilic addition in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes was newly accomplished. Namely, the aromatic aldehyde-selective nucleophilic addition using arenes and allyl silanes proceeded in the presence of trialkylsilyl triflate and 2,2′-bipyridyl, while the aliphatic aldehydes completely remained unchanged. The reactive pyridinium-type salt intermediate derived from an aromatic aldehyde chemoselectively underwent the nucleophilic substitution. Moreover, the aromatic acetals as the protected aldehydes could be directly transformed into similar pyridinium salt intermediates, which reacted with various nucleophiles coexisting with the aliphatic aldehydes.

The assessment of rice varieties origins in terms of their aroma traits is of great interest to protect consumers from fraud. To address this issue, the study identified differentially abundant metabolites between non-aromatic rice varieties and each of the three most popular aromatic rice varieties in the market using an untargeted metabolomics approach. The 656 metabolites of five rice grain varieties were determined by headspace solid-phase extraction gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry, and the multivariate analyses were used to identify differences in metabolites among rice varieties. The metabolites most differentially abundant between Daohuaxiang 2 and non-aromatic rice included 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline and acetoin; the metabolites most differentially abundant between Meixiangzhan 2 and non-aromatic rice included acetoin and 2-methyloctylbenzene,; and the metabolites most differentially abundant between Yexiangyoulisi and non-aromatic rice included bicyclo[4.4.0]dec,1-ene-2-isopropyl-5-methyl-9-methylene and 2-methylfuran. Overall, acetoin was the metabolite that was most differentially abundant between the aromatic and non-aromatic rice. This study provides direct evidence of the outstanding advantages of aromatic rice and acts a reference for future rice authentication processes in the marketplace.

Black Perigord truffle (Tubermelanosporum) is one of the most expensive fungi in the world that appreciated by gourmets. Studies have indicated the impact of growing location and soil microorganisms on the aroma profile of truffle. The aroma profile of West Australian black Perigord truffle (Tuber melanosporum) has not been previously reported, which was studied over a 14 day storage period. Sixty-four compounds were identified in all truffle samples. Significant changes (P > 0.05) were observed in 11 key volatiles (carbon dioxide, acetaldehyde, 2-butanone, 3-methyl-1-butanal, toluene, 2-butenal, formic acid 2-Me Bu ester, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 6-methyl-2-heptanol, 3-octanol and DMSO) over time. Comparison of these results against published aroma profile of European grown black Perigord truffle identified number of significant similarities and differences were also detected. DMSO, a compound previously identified in European grown white truffle (Tuber magnatum), was detected. Principle component anal. (PCA) showed that the major changes in the truffle aroma profile took place in the first 7 days of storage.

A single-pot Cu-catalyzed enantio- and diastereoselective tandem hydroboration/borylative cyclization of alkynes with ketones for the synthesis of carbocycles is reported. The reaction proceeds via desymmetrization and generates four contiguous stereocenters, including an all-C quaternary center. The method provides rapid access to [6,5]- and [5,5]-bicycles and cyclopentane products. Catalyst-controlled diastereoselectivity by selection of bisphosphine ligand is noted. Utility of the products is demonstrated by site- and chemoselective transformations that afford valuable alkenyl and allyl organoborons.
