A versatile method for the hydromethylation and hydroalkylation of alkenes at room temperature is achieved by using the photooxidative redox capacity of the valence band of anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2). Mechanistic studies support a radical-based mechanism involving the photoexcitation of TiO2 with 390 nm light in the presence of acetic acid and other carboxylic acids to generate Me and alkyl radicals, resp., without the need for stoichiometric base. This protocol is accepting of a broad scope of alkene and carboxylic acids, including challenging ones that produce highly reactive primary alkyl radicals and those containing functional groups that are susceptible to nucleophilic substitution such as alkyl halides. This methodol. highlights the utility of using heterogeneous semiconductor photocatalysts such as TiO2 for promoting challenging organic syntheses that rely on highly reactive intermediates.

Utility is underscored by the concise synthesis of bioactive compounds and postreaction functionalizations leading to structurally diverse scaffolds. DFT studies revealed that the regiochem. outcome originates from the orthogonal reactivity and chemoselectivity profiles of in situ generated organonickel species.

In this work a set of atropisomeric bipyridine N,N’-dioxides was tested as Lewis base catalysts for the asym. propargylation of aldehydes with trichloroallenylsilane. The catalysts were easily prepared in four simple steps starting from readily available Me ketones. Aryl-substituted derivatives proved to be highly active and showed a high level of enantiocontrol even at 1 mol% loading. The reaction scope includes a wide range of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and unsaturated aldehydes. New computations confirm that the key stereodetermining transition state structures for the synthesized catalysts are similar to those previously reported for the model structure.

The compound 2-(4-acetylphenyl)-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione was obtained by reacting phthalic anhydride with para-aminoacetophenone in glacial acetic acid for 2 h. This method was employed to synthesize the dihydropyrimidinone derivatives containing phthalimide moiety. Structures of all the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods.
