An unprecedent gem-carboborylation of aldehydes and ketones provides access to various secondary and tertiary alkyl boronic esters. The addition of B2pin2 to a carbonyl compound generates α-oxyl-substituted alkyl boron species. Organolithium and Grignard reagents are then applied as C nucleophiles for the 1,2-metalate rearrangement process. The organolithium reagents can also be generated by C-H lithiation or halogen/lithium exchange. The use of chiral ligands led to the generation of chiral alkyl boronic esters in enantioenriched form, demonstrating that the enantioselectivity of this transformation is catalyst-controlled.

A deoxygenative gem-diborylation and gem-silylborylation of aldehydes and ketones is described. The key for the success of this transformation is the base-promoted C-O bond borylation or silylation of the generated α-oxyboronates. Exptl. and theor. studies exhibit that the C-O bond functionalization proceeds via an intramol. five-membered transition-state, boryl migration followed by a 1,2-metalate rearrangement with OBpin as a leaving group. The transformation occurs with an inversion on the C center. Direct conversion of aldehydes and ketones to gem-diboron compounds was achieved by combining Cu catalysis with this base-promoted C-OBpin borylation. Various aldehydes and ketones were deoxygenatively gem-diborylated. Gem-Silylborylation of aldehydes and ketones were achieved by a stepwise operation, in which B2pin2 initially react with those carbonyls followed by a silylation with Bpin-SiMe2Ph.

In a green tandem reaction using aldehyde derivatives, malononitrile, and dimedone, a radical tandem Knoevenagel-Michael cyclocondensation reaction of tetrahydrobenzo[b] pyran scaffolds was developed. Using visible light as a sustainable energy source, methylene blue (MB+)-derived photo-excited state functions were employed in an aqueous solution as single-electron transfer (SET) and energy transfer catalysts. The range of yields is quite uniform (81-98%, average 92.18%), and the range of reaction time is very fast (2-7 min, average 3.7 min), and the point mentioned in the discussion is that the procedure tolerates a range of donating and withdrawing groups, while still giving very excellent yields. The reaction is fairly insensitive to the nature of the substituents. Research conducted in this project aims to develop a non-metallic cationic dye that is both inexpensive and widely available for more widespread use. In addition to energy efficiency and environmental friendliness, methylene blue also offers an excellent atom economy, time-saving features, and ease of use. As a result, a wide range of long-term chem. and environmental properties can be obtained. The turnover number and turnover frequency of tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyran scaffolds have been computed. Surprisingly, gram-scale cyclization is a possibility, implying that the technol. may be applied in industries.

A normal deuterium isotope effect was observed from the coupling reaction of 3-methoxyphenol with benzaldehyde and 2-propanol/2-propanol-d8 (kH/kD = 2.3 ±0.3). The carbon isotope effect was observed on the benzylic carbon of the alkylation product from the coupling reaction of 3-methoxyphenol with 4-methoxybenzaldehyde (C(3) = 1.021(3)) and on both benzylic and ortho-arene carbons from the coupling reaction with 4-trifluorobenzaldehdye (C(2) = 1.017(3), C(3) = 1.011(2)). The Hammett plot from the coupling reaction of 3-methoxyphenol with para-substituted benzaldehydes p-X-C6H4CHO (X = OMe, Me, H, F, Cl, CF3) displayed a V-shaped linear slope. Catalytically relevant Ru-H complexes were observed by NMR from a stoichiometric reaction mixture of [(C6H6)(PCy3)(CO)RuH]+BF4-, 3-methoxyphenol, benzaldehyde and 2-propanol in CD2Cl2. The DFT calculations provided a detailed catalysis mechanism featuring an electrophilic aromatic substitution of the aldehyde followed by the hydrogenolysis of hydroxy group. The calculations also revealed a mechanistic rationale for strong electronic effect of the aldehyde substrates p-X-C6H4CHO (X = OMe, CF3) in controlling the turnover-limiting step. The catalytic C-H coupling method provided an efficient synthetic protocol for 2-alkylphenols, 1,1-disubstituted benzofurans and xanthene derivatives without employing any reactive reagents or forming wasteful byproducts.
