The separation of desired monomers from a liquid-phase mixture of lignin depolymerization products is necessary to facilitate their up-scaling and upgrading for industrial applications. One effective method to sep. multiple liquid-phase products is countercurrent chromatog. (CCC), which is a common liquid chromatog. technique that separates target solutes based on differences in their partitioning in a biphasic solvent system. Effective CCC separation requires the selection of solvent compositions to tune solute partition coefficients To alleviate the exptl. burden of selecting optimal solvent systems, we apply the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) method to compute partition coefficients of representative lignin monomers from four currently used depolymerization strategies in standard solvent systems. We further design new ternary and quaternary solvent systems that are predicted to further improve separation efficacy. On the basis of these predicted partition coefficients and empirical solvent selection criteria for CCC measurements, we suggest a range of solvent systems that would be suitable for the effective separation of aromatic lignin-derived products via CCC or similar liquid-liquid extraction methods.

Anthracene is a highly valuable building block for luminescent conjugated polymers, particularly when a large singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔEST) is desired. Unfortunately, the extended π system of anthracene imparts a strong tendency for polymer aggregation, resulting in detrimental effects on its solid state photophysics. A large decrease in photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY, ΦF) on going from solution to the solid state is especially common, represented in terms of a low ΦR (ΦR = ΦF film/ΦF soluble). Significant and undesirable red-shifting of fluorescence in the solid state is also typical due to processes such as excimer formation. In this work a series of alkylene-encapsulated conjugated anthracene polymers is developed to overcome these challenging problems. We demonstrate a promising material which displays a good solid state PLQY that is effectively unchanged compared to solution measurements (ΦR âˆ?1, ΦF film âˆ?40%), alongside an identical PL 0-0 transition wavelength in solution and thin film. Such a direct transfer of luminescence properties from solution to the solid state is remarkable for a conjugated polymer and completely unprecedented for one based on anthracene.

Here, we report a triple aza[6]helicene-based mol. semiconductor (TBTA[6]H) characteristic of a fully fused conjugated backbone. TBTA[6]H presents superior solubility and glass-transition temperature (Tg). An air-doped composite of TBTA[6]H with a high elec. conductivity of 353μS cm-1 is still featured by a Tg of 112°C, enabling the fabrication of 22% efficiency, 85°C durable PSCs. The TBTA[6]H composite not only exhibits an excellent morphol. stability at 85°C in PSCs, but also remarkably attenuates the thermal degradation of photoactive perovskite layer. The cell with TBTA[6]H also displays an excellent operation stability under the continuous full sunlight soaking at 55°C.

The gastronomic relevance and price of truffles are related mainly to its unique aroma. In this study, we explore the impact that different volatile compounds have on the aroma quality of fresh truffles using gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Four hundred sixty fresh ascocarps of nine truffle species (Tuber aestivum, Tuber magnatum, Tuber melanosporum, Tuber mesentericum, Tuber brumale, Tuber excavatum, Tuber rufum, Tuber indicum and Tuber macrosporum) harvested in 2018/19 and 2019/2020 from 11 different countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia in Herzegovina, Macedonia, Italy, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Poland and China) were collected. Our investigation included the classification of species based on their aroma profile, a study of the differences in the volatile organic composition of truffle species over a geog. area, and, in more detail, a study of T. aestivum from four natural truffle growing sites in Slovenia. Our models can distinguish between groups, with small classification error. These models could form the basis of a predictive framework to detect fraud concerning truffle products and to determine the influence of different growing parameters on the aroma profile of truffles.

A disulfonimide catalyst activates racemic trichloroacetimidate substrates and imparts stereocontrol in the cyclization step, providing a new avenue for selective ortho-quinone methide iminium functionalization. A highly stereospecific oxidation readily transforms the enantioenriched acridanes into rotationally restricted acridiniums. Upon ion exchange, the method selectively affords atropisomeric acridinium tetrafluoroborate salts in high yields and an enantio-enrichment of up to 93 : 7 e.r. We envision that ion-pairing catalysis over ortho-quinone methide iminiums enables the selective synthesis of a diversity of heterocycles and aniline derivatives with distinct stereogenic units.

An aroma-based method for distinguishing different grades of Nongxiang Tieguanyin was explored by taking special grade (K110) and 1-4 grades (K101, K102, K103, and K104) of this tea as samples. Tea samples were analyzed by gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) combined with chemometrics. Results showed differences in the types and relative contents of aroma components among different grades of Nongxiang Tieguanyin tea. In the principal component anal. (PCA) scoring plot, except for K102 and K103, tea samples of different grades were distributed in different regions. Components satisfying variable important for the projection (VIP) > 1 and peak areas with significant differences (p < 0.05) among different tea grades were screened. Finally, 18 differential variables were screened out from 143 volatiles. The clustering results of these variables were consistent with those of PCA. K102 and K103 were initially clustered into one group and then clustered with K101, K110, and K104 in turn. This study provides a potential method for differentiating Nongxiang Tieguanyin teas of different grades based on aroma. Unknown samples could be classified by comparison of their spatial distribution with those of known standard samples in PCA or HCA, as well as the peak area differences of differential variables between unknown samples and known standard samples.
