A rhodium(III)-based catalytic system was used to develop a C-H bond activation of benzaldehyde derivatives and subsequent functionalization with dioxazolones in order to afford imides. The importance of the nature of the directing group to perform selectively the aldehydic C-H bond activation was highlighted. The scope investigation showed that this transformation was applied to various dioxazolones and many benzaldehyde derivatives as well as an acrolein derivative Derivatization reactions of the imide products demonstrated the synthetic utility of this rhodium-catalyzed aldehydic C-H amidation.

More interestingly, the single-electron transfer enables coupling with energy transfer of the excited fac-Ir(ppy)3 via enone intermediate formed in situ for cyclobutane formation.

A metal-free photocatalytic strategy for the preparation of thiocyanated heterocycles from inexpensive NH4SCN was developed using carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a general heterogeneous catalyst in a green solvent under an air atm. and the irradiation of a blue LED. Various thiocyanated heterocycles including indolo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-6(5H)-ones, benzimidazo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-6(5H)-ones, thioflavones, azaspiro[4.5]trienones and imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines were successfully synthesized in good yields (up to 96%). Importantly, this metal-free and external-oxidant-free procedure employed di-Me carbonate as a green medium, avoiding the traditional volatile organic solvents. Moreover, the recyclable g-C3N4 catalyst was used at least 8 times without significant loss of activities.

A series of variously substituted phosphoramidate titanium complexes bearing dimethylamido ligands are reported. Aryl-substituted ligands impart crystallinity to the systems and allow for the elucidation of the mol. structures via x-ray crystallog. Higher-substituted complexes, including a tris(phosphoramidate)mono(dimethylamido) complex, were isolated and characterized in the solid state, as well as in solution using variable temperature 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy. The steric bulk possessed by this ligand system, relative to amidate and ureate ligands, has allowed access to a mono(phosphoramidate)tris(dimethylamido) complex. The first solid-state-mol. structure of a mono-ligated 1,3-N,O chelated complex of titanium is reported and compared to the resp. bis- and tris-analogs. These complexes were screened for hydroaminoalkylation activity between secondary amines and terminal alkenes and the intramol. hydroamination of a terminal aminoalkene. Mono(phosphoramidate)tris(dimethylamido) complexes were screened in situ and more active than their resp. bis(N,O)-chelated analogs. The elucidation of these complexes allows for a direct comparison to other N,O-chelates of early transition metals, particularly in their hydroaminoalkylation and hydroamination reactivity.

A series of Pd-ZnO/TiO2, Pd/TiO2, and Pd/ZnO catalysts were synthesized and investigated for N-methylation of N-methylaniline (MA) to N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) with CO2 and H2. A high performance was observed with a Pd-ZnO/TiO2 catalyst, with 99.9% DMA selectivity at 94% MA conversion. By contrast, both Pd/TiO2 and Pd/ZnO were less active and/or selective. The catalytic performance of Pd-ZnO/TiO2 largely depended on reduction temperature and ZnO loading. The rates for MA conversion (rateMA) and DMA production (rateDMA) increased linearly with the amount of PdZn alloy formed. The reaction was likely to take place via intermediates of N-methylformanilide (MFA) and formate. Formate was produced through the reduction of CO2 with H2 as confirmed by in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform IR spectroscopy and then added to MA producing MFA, and finally, MFA was subsequently adsorbed and hydrogenated to DMA. All these steps were promoted by the PdZn alloy. The hydrogenation of MFA to DMA was much faster than the N-methylation of MA to MFA; DMA was stable, so the selectivity to DMA was almost 100% over the Pd-ZnO/TiO2 catalyst.
