A series of reactions between 5-nitroso-1,3-diphenyltetrazolium tetrafluoroborate and methoxybenzenes such as 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene, 1,3-dimethoxybenzene, methoxybenzene, amines such as aniline, N,N’-bianiline, benzhydrylamine, benzylamine, thiols (thioanisole, thiophenol), sulfoxides (DMSO, di-Ph sulfoxide) and di-Ph sulfide, most of which are generally accepted as being inert to nitroso groups, is reported here. The tetrazolium-activated nitroso functionality is capable of oxidizing the aforementioned substrates to give the corresponding oxidized products e.g., azobenzene, and the nitroso tetrazolium itself is transformed into the corresponding amide or hydroxyamide I [R = NH-, O-], depending on the nature of the reaction partners. In the case of thioanisole, an addition product II•BF4- was obtained.

The transfer hydrogenation and successive cyclization coupling reaction of ortho-phenylenediamine with methanol to afford benzimidazole and N-methylbenzimidazole was also efficiently realized under moderate reaction conditions. Recycling experiments showed that the iridium nanocatalyst had a good stability without obvious activity loss.

In the applied research, the resulting quinolinium salts I could serve as synthons and could be further transformed into diverse synthetically useful 3-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)quinolin-4-ones III in water. This protocol offers a simple cascade strategy to synthesize a wide variety of natural-like chromeno[3,2-c]quinolin-5-ium salts and quinolin-4-ones, and demonstrates academic research potential as well as industrial applications.

Here the authors show a dearomative, diastereoselective annulation of azaarenes, via ruthenium(II) reductive catalysis, proceeding with excellent selectivity, mild conditions, and broad substrate and functional group compatibility. Mechanistic studies reveal that the products are formed via hydride transfer-initiated β-aminomethylation and α-arylation of the pyridyl core in the azaarenes, and that paraformaldehyde serves as both the C1-building block and reductant precursor, and the use of Mg(OMe)2 base plays a critical role in determining the reaction chemoselectivity by lowering the hydrogen transfer rate. The present work opens a door to further develop valuable reductive functionalization of unsaturated systems by taking profit of formaldehyde-endowed two functions.
