A highly selective N-monomethylation of aniline and nitrobenzene using methanol as methylating reagent was achieved with high efficiency when using an encapsulated iridium nanocatalyst. A wide range of amines and nitro compounds reacted well in the established catalytic system with moderate to excellent product yields and good functional group tolerance. The transfer hydrogenation and successive cyclization coupling reaction of ortho-phenylenediamine with methanol to afford benzimidazole and N-methylbenzimidazole was also efficiently realized under moderate reaction conditions. Recycling experiments showed that the iridium nanocatalyst had a good stability without obvious activity loss.

Huang, Ming published the artcileRuthenium(II) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphine ligands for the N-alkylation of amines with alcohols, COA of Formula: C8H11NO, the main research area is secondary arylamine preparation; amine alc alkylation ruthenium phosphine ligand catalyst.

Metal hydride complexes are key intermediates for N-alkylation of amines with alcs. by the borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen autotransfer (BH/HA) strategy. Reactivity tuning of metal hydride complexes could adjust the dehydrogenation of alcs. and the hydrogenation of imines. Herein we report ruthenium(II) complexes with hetero-bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-phosphine ligands, which realize smart pathway selection in the N-alkylated reaction via reactivity tuning of [Ru-H] species by hetero-bidentate ligands. In particular, complex I·BArF- with a Ph wingtip group and BArF- counter anion, is shown to be one of the most efficient pre-catalysts for this transformation (temperature is as low as 70°C, neat conditions and catalyst loading is as low as 0.25 mol%). A large variety of (hetero)aromatic amines and primary alcs. were efficiently converted into mono-N-alkylated amines in good to excellent isolated yields. Notably, aliphatic amines, challenging methanol and diamines could also be transformed into the desired products. Detailed control experiments and d. functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insights to understand the mechanism and the smart pathway selection via [Ru-H] species in this process.

Donthireddy, S. N. R. published the artcileRuthenium(II) Complexes of Heteroditopic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Efficient Catalysts for C-N Bond Formation via a Hydrogen-Borrowing Strategy under Solvent-Free Conditions, Safety of 4-Methoxy-N-methylaniline, the main research area is ruthenium imidazolylidene triazolylidene complex preparation crystal structure benzylation catalyst; crystal structure ruthenium imidazolylidene triazolylidene complex; mol structure ruthenium imidazolylidene triazolylidene complex; benzyl alc coupling reaction benzylation aniline derivative carbeneruthenium catalyst; quinoline derivative preparation.

Both imidazol-2-ylidene (ImNHC) and 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) have evolved to be elite groups of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands for homogeneous catalysis. To develop efficient Ru(II)-based catalysts incorporating these ligands for C-N bond-forming reactions via H-borrowing methodol., the authors used chelating ligands integrated with ImNHC and mesoionic tzNHC donors connected via a CH2 spacer with a diverse triazole backbone. The synthesized Ru(II) complexes 3 are highly efficient for C-N bond formation across a wide range of primary amine and alc. substrates under solvent-free conditions, and among all of the complexes studied here, catalyst 3a with a mesityl substituent displayed maximum activity. Catalyst 3a is also effective for the selective mono-N-methylation of various anilines using MeOH as a coupling partner, known to be relatively more difficult than other alcs. Also, complex 3a also delivers various substituted quinolines successfully via the reaction of 2-aminobenzyl alc. with several secondary alcs. Importantly, catalyst 3a exhibited the highest activity among the reported Ru(II) complexes for both the N-benzylation of aniline [achieving a turnover number (TON) of 50000] and the realization of quinoline 8a by reacting 2-aminobenzyl alc. with 2-phenylethanol (attaining a TON of 30000). The significance of electronic tuning in the Ru(II) complexes of chelating ligands featuring a combination of ImNHC and tzNHC donors with various triazole backbones is demonstrated by applying them in diverse C-N bond-forming reactions via a H-borrowing strategy. Notably, the Ru(II) complex 3a having an N-mesityl substituent displayed the highest activity among known Ru(II) complexes for both the N-benzylation of aniline [a turnover number (TON) of 50000] and the synthesis of quinoline via the reaction of 2-aminobenzyl alc. with 2-phenylethanol (a TON of 30000).
