Piehl, Patrick published the artcileEfficient methylation of anilines with methanol catalysed by cyclometalated ruthenium complexes, Synthetic Route of 5961-59-1, the main research area is methylaniline preparation; aniline methanol methylation ruthenium complex catalyst.

Cyclometalated ruthenium complexes, e.g., I, allow the effective methylation of anilines (R = 4-bromophenyl, 2-methylphenyl, 4-carbamoylphenyl, etc.) with methanol to selectively give N-methylanilines RNHCH3. This hydrogen autotransfer procedure proceeds under mild conditions (60°C) in a practical manner (NaOH as base). Mechanistic investigations suggest an active homogenous ruthenium complex and β-hydride elimination of methanol as the rate determining step.
