Bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(ll) dichloride (1.16 g, 1 .65 mmol, 5 mol%) was added and the reaction mixture was heated at 60 C for 20 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, the mixture was filtered and the filtrate was evaporated. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography using a gradient of /’so-hexanes/ethyl acetate 20:1 to 10:1 to afford the title compound (7.1 g, 92%) as a pale yellow solid.

The reaction mixture is washed with dilute hydrochloric acid, dried (anhydrous sodium sulfate) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is dissolved in methanol and 0.25 g of 5% palladium on charcoal is added. The reaction mixture is stirred at ambient temperature under a hydrogen atmosphere (40 psi). After the hydrogenolysis is complete, the reaction mixture is filtered and the filtrate is concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by column chromatography to provide 1-(5-isoquinolinesulfonyl)-2,5-dimethylpiperazine:

MS (ESI) m/z: 297.9 (M+H).
