An attractive, versatile, and operationally simple, visible-light-induced, transition-metal-free, photocatalyst-free, and oxidant-free trifluoromethylation has been demonstrated. Triflic anhydride (Tf2O), being inexpensive and readily available, was chosen as the radical trifluoromethyl source. Thianthrene was used as a recyclable Tf2O-activating reagent, and a high-yielding and scalable trifluoromethylation reaction was achieved. D. functional theory and mechanistic studies showed that a free radical homolytic process excited by visible light is involved in this reaction, generating a key trifluoromethyl radical intermediate.

A protocol for the generation and precise control of the sulfonyl radical from dimethylsulfamoyl chloride was reported. Different kinds of alkyl sulfonates and sulfonamides were efficiently and selectively obtained under redox-neutral conditions by controlling the reactivity of photocatalysts. A mechanism for the generation of sulfamoyl and sulfonate radicals from dimethylsulfamoyl chloride and the followed sulfonation and sulfonamidation were proposed. This reaction system offers a distinct advantage over traditional oxidation or reduction sulfonation methods in not requiring the use of sulfur dioxide, sulfonic acid, a stoichiometric reductant, or a stoichiometric oxidant. Thus, it should be of practical value for the late-stage functionalization of natural products or medicines.

Herein, the first Oxone-mediated direct arylhydroxylation of activated alkenes were developed for the synthesis of valuable hydroxyl-containing oxindoles and 3,4-dihydroquinolin-2-ones. The products were controlled by adjusting the structure of the initial alkenes. Moreover, the reaction were performed under simple conditions without any external additives or catalysts. Primary mechanistic studies showed that this reaction were a tandem process involving epoxidation and subsequent Friedel-Crafts alkylation, and oxone played a dual role (both the oxidant and proton source) in this process.

We report a new system for the silylation of aryl C-H bonds. The combination of [Ir(cod)(OMe)]2 and 2,9-Me2-phenanthroline (2,9-Me2-phen) catalyzes the silylation of arenes at lower temperatures and with faster rates than those reported previously, when the hydrogen byproduct is removed, and with high functional group tolerance and regioselectivity. Inhibition of reactions by the H2 byproduct is shown to limit the silylation of aryl C-H bonds in the presence of the most active catalysts, thereby masking their high activity. Anal. of initial rates uncovered the high reactivity of the catalyst containing the sterically hindered 2,9-Me2-phen ligand but accompanying rapid inhibition by hydrogen. With this catalyst, under a flow of nitrogen to remove hydrogen, electron-rich arenes, including those containing sensitive functional groups, undergo silylation in high yield for the first time, and arenes that underwent silylation with prior catalysts react over much shorter times with lower catalyst loadings. The synthetic value of this methodol. is demonstrated by the preparation of key intermediates in the synthesis of medicinally important compounds in concise sequences comprising silylation and functionalization. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that the cleavage of the aryl C-H bond is reversible and that the higher rates observed with the 2,9-Me2-phen ligand are due to a more thermodynamically favorable oxidative addition of aryl C-H bonds.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important to determine the aroma and sensory perception of cocoa. Starter cultures can modulate the volatile profile of cocoa beans during fermentation This study aimed to determine the VOCs and sensory of chocolates produced using cocoa beans fermented with yeast starters (Pichia kudriavzevii (MH979681), Hanseniaspora thailandica (MH979675) and the mixture of the two yeasts (Mix)). The VOCs of chocolates were determined by Head-Space Solid Phase Microextraction followed by Gas Chromatog.-Mass Spectrophotometry. Sensory anal. was determined by using trained panels. VOCs profiles of chocolates produced using beans fermented with HT, PK or Mix were noticeably different from Ghana and control chocolates (no starter). The addition of yeast starters during cocoa fermentation produced chocolates that were preferred by trained panels. Bitterness and astringency were the more intense flavor attributes in chocolates produced using cocoa beans added with yeast starters. The chocolate produced using cocoa beans fermented with PK was the most acidic; whereas chocolate produced using beans fermented with Mix had the sweetest taste. The addition of PK or HT is helpful in producing chocolate with a distinct flavor.

Herein, we report a modified procedure for the classical Pomeranz-Fritsch protocol, which expands the scope of 1,2-dihydroisoquinoline (DHIQ) products. 1,2-DHIQs are an attractive branch point for the synthesis of IQs, but because of their innate reactivity, they have remained difficult to prepare We demonstrate that the Fujioka/Kita conditions, combining trimethylsilyl triflate (TMSOTf) and an amine base, activate dimethylacetals required for Pomeranz-Fritsch cyclization under sufficiently mild conditions to prepare a broad range of 1,2-DHIQ products. We also demonstrate the synthetic value of these DHIQs by further functionalization to either reduced tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) or fully aromatized IQ natural products.

It was shown that trifluoromethyl groups can be readily installed into a broad range of organic compounds by using water as the reaction medium and light as the energy source. By taking advantage of the high excited state reduction potential of N-phenylphenothiazine (PTH) through UV light illumination, the direct C-H trifluoromethylation of a wide array of small organic mols. was achieved selectively with high substrate conversion. Key to the approach was slowing down the production of CF3 radicals during the chem. process by reducing the catalyst loading as well as the light intensity, thereby improving effectiveness and selectivity of this aqueous photocatalytic method. Furthermore, the catalyst system showed excellent recyclability and can be fueled by sunlight. The method proposed here is versatile, widely applicable, energy efficient, and attractive for late-stage introduction of trifluoromethyl groups into biol. active mols.

Work previously published by our group described novel methodol. for the synthesis of xanthones and related products from phenolic benzophenones in a reaction mediated by ceric ammonium sulfate (CAS). In this paper we further explore this novel reaction by subjecting an addnl. set of phenolic benzophenones to CAS to afford a range of compounds, including xanthones, 9H-xanthen-2,9(4aH)-diones, 3H-spiro[benzofuran-2,1′-cyclohexa[2,5]diene]-3,4′-diones, and biaryl compounds A comparison of these reactions with the more commonly used oxidant ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) was also conducted. Based on these results, greater insight into the reaction mechanism has been gained. In addition, the conversion of the synthesized xanthen-2,9(4aH)-diones to xanthones by treatment with sodium dithionite is described.
