Several 7-substituted 1,8-phenanthrolines and their 8-N-oxides were prepared. 1,8-Phenanthroline 8-N-oxide with phosphoryl chloride afforded 7-chloro-1,8-phenanthroline which was converted to other derivatives by replacement of chlorine atom by methoxy or phenoxy group.The same N-oxide in Reissert reaction formed 7-cyano- then 7-carboxy-1,8-phenanthroline which were oxidized with H2O2 in CH3COOH to their 8-N-oxides. 7-Methyl-1,8-phenanthroline obtained by Skraup procedure from 5-amino-1-methylisoquinoline and its 8-N-oxide were oxidized with selenium dioxide to formyl derivatives converted also to thiosemicarbazones.
