The aldehyde was readily obtained from a 1-cyanoisoquinoline, and subjected to a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction. The chiral tetrahydroisoquinoline derivative thus obtained was used for the synthesis of the optically active isoquinoline alkaloids.
