Synthesis of 5-bromo-8-nitro-N-methylisoquinolinium iodide; Iodomethane (506 mmol) was added to a solution of 5-bromo-8-nitroisoquinoline (101 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (200 mL) and the reaction mixture was maintained for 16 h at 40 C. The precipitated solids were collected by filtration, washed with ether (2¡Á250 mL), and dried to provide 5-bromo-8-nitro-N-methylisoquinolinium iodide in 83% yield as a red solid.
