2,3,5-Trichloro-4-pyridinol (Daxtron) (I) is a white, solid, highly stable compound, m. approx. 216°. Solubilities in g. per 100 g. solvent at 23° are: H2O 0.057; acetone 4.0; benzene 0.071; EtOH (95%) 4.21; xylene 0.30; NaOH (1%) 5.35. Vapor pressures at 26° and 50° are 5.50 × 10-6 and 1.39 × 10-4 mm. Hg, resp. I, normally used as the K salt, was absorbed by both roots and foliage and was especially effective for the control of grasses, though it also controlled many broadleaf weeds. Used in noncrop situations at early postemergence, 1.25 lb. I/acre controlled for one season. Against more mature broadleaf vegetation, I (2.5 lb.) plus Tordon (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) (1 lb.) was more effective. Orchardgrass, broomgrass and quackgrass were completely controlled by I at 6 lb./acre. Under more humid conditions higher dosages were required. Granular forms could also be used, especially preemergence. Preliminary crop trials in sugarcane gave promising control at <2 and in corn at 0.25-0.75 lb./acre.
