Exploiting trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate as Lewis acid, (hetero)aromatics underwent regioselective and direct carbamoylation. The method is based on the in situ generation of a highly electrophilic carbamoyl triflate active species. Thus, e.g., resorcinol di-Me ether + dimethylcarbamoyl chloride → 2,4-dimethoxy-N,N-dimethylbenzamide (80%) in presence of TMSOTf in MeNO2.
