The authors report a one-pot, efficient, pseudo-four-component condensation of aromatic aldehydes R1CHO [R1 = Ph, 4-FC6H4, 2,3,4-(MeO)3C6H2, etc.], malononitrile, 2′-hydroxyacetophenone derivatives 2-HO-4-R2C6H3C(O)CH3 (R2 = H, OH) in the presence of a reusable basic ionic liquid, [HO-CH2-CH2-NH3+][HCOO-], as catalyst for the synthesis of chromeno[1,6]naphthyridine derivatives I in water as a green solvent at reflux conditions. The method has several advantages such as good yields, short reaction times, and a simple work-up procedure.
