A dehydrative C- and S-alkylation procedure by nucleophilic substitution of γ-hydroxysulfones with arenes and thiophenols is reported. This study represents an elegant and ecol. concept to construct C-C and C-S bonds leading to unsym. 1,1- and 3,3-branched propanes. The γ-hydroxysulfones underwent BF3.OEt2-mediated dehydrative arylation and thiolation at room temperature and elimination at 40°. The nucleophile attack occurred on the less hindered side of a planar benzylic carbocation to furnish the title compounds with good diastereoselectivity.
