Replicated field herbicide studies on gladiolus corms and cormels over 6 years are summarized. Relatively nontoxic herbicides for corms included amiben (4 lb./ acre), dichlorobenil (5 lb.), DCPA (15 lb.), diphenamid (3 lb.), emid or Eptam (6 lb.), diuron (1-2 lb.), linuron (1 lb.), Tillam (6 lb.), Caparol (3 lb.), sesone (4 lb.), simazine (1 lb.), and Treflan (1-4 lb. active ingredient/acre). The soil must be wet for Treflan to be effective. Many of these materials could be surface sprayed, applied as preemergent sprays, or just prior to flower spikes. Relative nontoxic herbicides for planting stock and cormels included amiben, DCPA, emid, sesone, and Treflan, at the above dosages. Weed control was poorest with sesone and good with DCPA; the other herbicides gave excellent weed control.
