Under LED UV irradiation, N-alkylanilines such as N-methylaniline underwent aerobic oxidative cycloaddition reactions with di-Me and di-Et acetylenedicarboxylates mediated by Et3N and C4F9I in MeCN to yield N-alkylindoledicarboxylates such as I without added photocatalysts or metals. The 1:1 complex of N-methylaniline and di-Et acetylenedicarboxylate was detected by NMR, and intermediates in the reaction were observed by mass spectrometry; the reaction was inhibited by radical inhibitors.
