Improved procedure for the deracemization (resolution) of α-Me dihydrocinnamic aldehydes (2-methyl-3-phenylpropanals) of formula RCHMeCHO [R = Ph, 4-methoxyphenyl, 4-isopropylphenyl, 4-tert-butylphenyl, benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl] with L-(+)-tartaric acid salt of (S)-enantiomer of Betti’s base (I) to obtain naphthoxazines (II) and optically active dihydrocinnamic aldehydes (III) is presented. The method enabled the transacetalization of N,O-ketal (R)-enantiomer of Betti’s base (IV) with various aldehydes of formula R1-CHO [R1 = Ph, iso-Bu, 1-(4-isopropylphenyl)propan-2-yl, 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethyl, benzyl, 4-nitrophenyl, 1-[(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)methyl]propan-2-yl, 1-(4-tert-butylphenyl)propan-2-yl] to give N,O-ketals (V) and (VI) (R1 = same as above).
