An efficient iodic acid-triggered radical cyclization of alkenes with N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) was described. This operationally simple method was conducted under metal- and catalyst-free conditions, producing the precious aminooxylated 3,3-disubstituted 2-oxindoles in good to high yields. Green and readily available HIO3 was used as a sole and safe initiator, making this protocol highly advantageous.
