A deoxygenative trifluoromethylthiolation method yielded trifluoromethyl thioesters RCOSCF3 [R = 4-t-BuC6H4, 3-MeOC6H4, (2-(2,3-dimethoxyphenyl)vinyl), etc.] from readily available carboxylic acids using trifluoromethylthiolating reagents was repored. The method was built upon an “”umpolung”” strategy where triphenylphosphine was used to first activate an electrophilic trifluoromethylthiolating reagent and then served as an oxygen acceptor for the deoxygenation. The method was mild, efficient, broad-scope and tolerant. The trifluoromethyl thioesters could be converted into trifluoromethyl thioether by Pd-catalyzed decarbonylation.
