In the presence of [Cp*RhCl2]2 , pivalic acid, and AgSbF6, arylacetamides such as PhCH2CONHi-Pr underwent regioselective and diastereoselective alkenylation with arylethynylsilanes RCCSiMe3 (R = Ph, 4-MeC6H4, 2-MeC6H4, 4-t-BuC6H4, 4-FC6H4, 3-FC6H4, 2-BrC6H4, 4-ClC6H4, 1-naphthyl, 2-thienyl, 4-MeOC6H4) to yield ortho-alkenylphenylacetamides such as I (R = Ph, 4-MeC6H4, 2-MeC6H4, 4-t-BuC6H4, 4-FC6H4, 3-FC6H4, 2-BrC6H4, 4-ClC6H4, 1-naphthyl, 2-thienyl, 4-MeOC6H4). The effect of substitution on the arylacetamide moiety and the deuterium kinetic isotope effect were determined, deuterium labeling experiments were performed, and a silylalkenylarylacetamide intermediate was isolated to provide evidence for the mechanism of the reaction; the in situ-generated rhodium species is likely to be Lewis acidic and to play a role in the desilylation step.
