An efficient and straightforward hydrogen-bonding-network-assisted regioselective sulfenylation of electron-rich arenes with N-thiosuccinimides was developed for the synthesis of thioarenes ArSR [R = c-hexyl, 4-MeC6H4, 2-FC6H4, etc.; Ar = 4-NMe2C6H4, 1-methylindol-3-yl, 5-MeO-1H-indol-3-yl, etc.]. This method was also used for the synthesis of ((trifluoromethyl)thio)arenes ArSCF3 via trifluoromethylthiolation of arenes using electrophilic N-(trifluoromethylthio)saccharin as SCF3 reagent. This catalyst-free protocol offered good yields for a wide range of arenes and showed good functional group tolerance without any protecting groups.
