A major problem in mech. harvesting of cotton is to efficiently remove or desiccate the leaves and inhibit further growth. The major areas of study are: defoliation, desiccation, regrowth inhibition, wilt agents, and effects of harvest-aid chem. on boll weevils. Various chem. agents were tested against amitrole as control. Pyrichlor was most active as regrowth inhibitor when applied at 0.5 to 0.7 5 lb/acre, about half that of amitrole. Paraquat increased the defoliant activity of Def and Folex. GC 7887 is a promising defoliant. Defoliants had little effect on weevil numbers, whereas desiccants decreased the number of weevils, probably because they reduced the food supply. Chem. residues were not detected after 5 months in treated soil or seed samples.
