A novel and efficient one-pot method was developed for the synthesis of 2-(2-oxochromen-4-yl)cyclopropanecarbonitriles I [R1 = 6-Me, 6-Cl, 7-benzyl, etc.; R2 = Ph, 4-oxochromen-2-yl, 1-methylimidazol-2-yl, etc.; R3 = NC, ethoxycarbonyl] by the cyclization of 4-bromomethylcoumarins, aryl aldehydes and active methylene groups in 1:1 acetonitrile and water solvent in the presence of KSCN and K2CO3 as a catalyst at room temperature for 2-5 h. The significant attraction of this procedure was, environmentally benign, simple procedure, the ready accessibility of the catalyst, excellent yield and mild reaction conditions. The structure of the target mol. I [R1 = 6,8-di-Me, R2 = 2,3-dimethoxyphenyl, R3 = NC] was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The structures of the synthesized compounds I were confirmed by spectral methods viz. IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, mass spectral anal. and X-ray diffraction studies.
