Synthesis of N-oxyl radicals based on N-hydroxybenzimidazole were prepared and used as catalysts for direct C-H functionalization reaction of aldehydes with benzyl amine to afford N-benzyl-amides RC(O)NHBn [R = n-pentyl, Ph, (CH2)2Ph, etc.] in one-pot manner. Also, a series of carbonyl compounds R1C(O)R2 [R1 = (CH2)2Ph; R2 = OEt, OBn, pyrrolidin-1-yl etc.] was prepared via 1-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium tetrafluoroborate catalyzed C-H functionalization reaction of 3-phenylpropanal with various nucleophiles. A class of unsym. ketones R3C(O)R4 [R3 = (CH2)2Ph; R4 = Ph, CH2CO2Me, 1,3-(OMe)2C6H3, etc.] was synthesized via reaction of phenylpropanoyl fluoride with various carbon nucleophiles. Moreover, with 1-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium tetrafluoroborate as catalyst, a metal-free approach for the synthesis of acyl fluorides R5C(O)F [R5 = (CH2)2Ph, 4-MeC6H4, 4-MeOC6H4] via direct C-H fluorination of aldehydes using selectfluor as reagent under mild conditions was reported. N-hydroxybenzimidazole catalysts were carried out for d. functional theory calculations in order to estimate the bond dissociation energy values of the O-H bonds within the moiety.
