Herein, catalyst-free selective N-formylation and N-methylation of amines using CO2 as a sustainable C1 source are described. By tuning the reaction solvent and temperature, the selective synthesis of formamides R1NR2CHO (R1 = n-Bu, C6H5, Bn, etc.; R2 = Me, Et, C6H5, etc.) and methylamines R1NR2(Me) (R1 = n-Bu, C6H5, 2-MeC6H4, etc.; R2 = Me, n-Bu, Bn, etc.) is achieved in good to excellent yields using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a sustainable reductant.
